Happy Thanksgiving everyone! After HFT, I did come close to moving LASA A above State College A after LASA won HFT against State College, but decided to stay with the current order due to State College missing a player and the latter’s strong performance at ACF Fall.
I hope that within the next month, I’ll be able to start trying to figure out the relative difficulty of sets compared to each other.
I have removed 27 Oak Park and River Forest (IL) from the rankings due to no results. Of course, I just found their IHSSBA Kickoff stats, which indicate they’re somewhere in the 30-50 space, and they will reappear in the next set of official rankings.
New to the rankings: 13 IMSA A (IL), 28 Lisgar A (ON), 52 Auburn B (IL), 62 Glenwood (IL), 68 Torrey Pines B (CA), 69 Wheaton-Warrenville (IL), 75 LASA C (TX), 79 IMSA B (IL), 80 Lisgar B (ON), 89 Fort Zumwalt West (MO) (off statistics from an unofficial event), 92 LASA D (TX), 96 Maclay (FL), 100 Maggie Walker B (VA)
Falling out of the rankings: 87 Beachwood (OH), 89 Horace Greeley (NY), 90 Cave Spring (VA), 91 Seven Lakes B (TX), 92 Rickards (FL), 93 Northmont B (OH), 94 Rock Bridge (MO), 95 Eden Prairie B (MN), 96 University B (CA), 97 Ballard (KY), 98 High Technology (NJ), 99 Bayside (FL)

VCU Fall (HSAPQ 15, 335.6 ppg, 3.6 15pg, 17.31 ppb)
Cave Spring’s VCU Fall stats are misleading because their full team only played in the playoffs.
When they did all play they had around 18.5 or so PPB.
I would like to note that Bellarmine D at Cardinal Junior Classic was effectively an underpowered version of Bellarmine B. (for appropriate classification, of course)
I think you made a mistake on Eden Prairie being taken off the poll, unless you mean Eden Prairie B.
😦
Oh, and Eden Prairie is on there at 87.
I meant Eden Prairie B. My bad.
Fred,
No love for St. Joe’s NJ ? We go to HFT and defeat TJB, LASA B, Hunter B and Seton Hall, and give LASA A a tougher match than several in the first tier, then play QuAC, finish 3rd and nearly defeat Richard Montgomery, while also defeating Hunter B & Seton Hall at Samhain and Cheshire at FaCT, and then we FALL in the rankings while defeating all these teams ranked ahead of us head-to-head? FRED, FRED, FRED, what’s a team gotta do? It’s OK though, we still love ya and know this a fun thing. But it seems you lock into PPB and ignore head to head matches—yes? PPB is a great indictor, true, but WINS and LOSSES are even better. Hope you’re having a great Thanksgiving!!!
This is a shorter response than I’d like to give, but unfortunately I’m rather restrained by time right now.
I prefer PPB over W-L because it reflects a team’s performance over a number of rounds, while a single win is a very small sample size. In a lot of cases right now, I have very limited data on a lot of teams; St. Joseph’s playing eight teams is a real outlier.
However, I do need to do a better job of accounting for teams, such as yours, which have consistently performed well against teams that I would rank above them by stats like PPB. I will try to account for this better in the future, though.
I’m a little shocked that Chattahoochee isn’t ranked higher. Didn’t they win their HFT mirror over Alpharetta?
Chattahoochee defeated Alpharetta by 20 points in the final. I prefer the stronger showing of Alpharetta over 10 games in that tournament.
I actually expect all teams that played on HFT to get a bump in the near future, since I’ll be taking a look at that set, and I expect it to have seriously depressed scoring compared to an IS or HSAPQ set.
As previously explained, Bellarmine didn’t actually “split teams” at the Cardinal Junior Classic, if I’m interpreting that phrase correctly. Nikhil and I didn’t play at all, and our best player from “B” was on “D,” meaning that the only team on here from which you can gauge any accurate information is Bellarmine C.
This will be reflected in the next ranking.
Yeah I’d give Chatt major credit for beating Alpharetta. Also give Centennial credit for knocking off Alpharetta at Brookwood and giving Dorman A a good game in the final.
No need to add Torrey Pines B- that wasn’t their real B team, they split their A team at our HFT mirror just like La Jolla did (and Rancho was playing with only with one A-teamer, their 2nd best player). I’d also push Torrey and La Jolla up closer to 30-ish, though I think RB’s in the right place.
You’re always there to stick up for Centennial, aren’t you, Coach C? I’ll just say that the questions at Brookwood were atrocious, and nobody can really draw any conclusions from that whatsoever (there’s a lot of discussion on the GATA board that hasn’t made it over to hsquizbowl). Chattahoochee, on the other hand, did get a hard-earned victory over us at HFT, and I do think that both Chattahoochee and Centennial are underrated.
George C. Marshall is in Virginia.
What about the U of L Academic Challenge? We beat Northmont by almost 200
Are there stats up? I haven’t seen them yet.
Full stats weren’t kept. W-L and pp20TUH are up at http://www.naqt.com/stats/tournament-teams.jsp?tournament_id=3344. Sadly you can’t just use our stats, but, from my scoresheets, we had 2.4 15s per game and had 18.915 ppb. There are the stats from Walnut Hills in case you can use them; I’m not sure if someone from Northmont and Manual was keeping score and would be willing to post their stats or not.
Not that it necessarily would have changed the result, but Northmont’s second best player (who is also the captain) was missing that day.
Oh, and Manual was missing Akshai from the A team.
Fred,
You’re funny. Not to pick on Chesire, because they have a very good team. But let’s use them to reveal the flaw in your method. At FaCT they had over 24 PPB; we had 22 or so. We defeated them head to head by over 200 points—they got 7 TU’s. we got 13—but their PPB was higher, so they are better? They lost 4 games in that tournament, we lost one. Next, FaCT is the only tournament for which you have data on Chesire. We have competed in EIGHT Tournaments and played well in all of them, 4 NAQT STYLE, 4 ACF STYLE. We went to HFT and were paired with LASA in the Prelims and played them tough for a while and did as well as anyone except SC and Dorman. We then won the next tier with 5 Championship calibre teams as our opponents, and ALL of them are rated higher than us in your poll. Yet after our 8-2 at HFT, going 4-2 againnst your top 60, and averaging 320 PPG and close to 19 PPB, we FALL, while teams we defeated climb? Then we went to QuAC and finshed 9-1 in prelims, losing only to eventual winner St. Anselm’s in a respectable match, then we played your #9 RM in the semis and the match came down to the last question—we held them to 200 points under their tourney average. So, with as many tournaments under our belt as just about anyone, your suggest that the individual matches I cited are to few to give you a picture? We’ve played over 80 matches, Cheshire about 10 or so, yet you still have them ahead of us. Why? PPB. Do you think perhaps your method is flawed? You ignore TU’s and PPG!!!!!–and final tournament placement!!! But before closing, let me say this: We understand that in the final analysis this is all for fun. Your ranking will neither help nor hurt us head to head against any team we play, and if we do not produce, we will lose. Further, we understand that PPB is an area we nee to improve and we are sure we will. And, we know that what you are doing is not easy and that it is easy to overlook or miss performances when there are so many to evaluate. So, we no matter where you rank us, even if we drop out of the rankings, we appreciate what you are doing and know it engenders interest and fun around the nation. But you do need to rethink your ranking of Centennial & Chattahoochie, for Alpharetta is the real deal, and if those teams defeated Alpharetta, they are very dangerous teams indeed. Oh yes—we forgive you for not knowing our true perforamnce stats at HFT, since Andy made one large error in our match with LASA B which lowered our PPB & PPG t HFT, as well as reversing our win in that match. In the meantime, enjoy your turkey day leftovers!!!!
As captain for Cheshire, I will vouch that Mr. Powers’ assessment of our team at FAcT is fair; we did in fact lose to St. Joe’s by about 200 points and lost several other matches. We were also unpracticed and missing a more experienced member of our team that went to HSNCT last year. That said, we look forward to (hopefully) proving ourselves worthy of our ranking soon.
Um, I’m sorry if I’m ignorant and stupid, but why do you guys care so much? This is Fred’s personal rating of the high school quizbowl teams, no more, no less. There are plenty of probably overrated (RB) and underrated (TP) teams here
Apologies—Chesire only lost 3 matches at FaCT, not 4.
Team identification correction: I’m not sure who BCC (at the Whitman mirror of HFT) is, but it isn’t Bergen NJ.
The BCC at the Whitman Mirror of HFT is probably Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School, if anyone was curious.
I forget if this has been mentioned already, but the bonus conversion stats for TJ B at FRIGHT are inaccurate — the FRIGHT stats claim that TJ B had a 4ppb and a 5ppb game, neither of which actually happened. I’m not sure what the actual bonus conversion for those games was, but not counting those two games, TJ B averaged 20.87 ppb over eight games, a significant increase from 17.89 ppb.
Oh, well — you win some, you lose some. Stocks go up and stocks go down.
Perhaps results from Texas tournaments are not listed because they are not important? I’m new to the rankings game, so I can plead ignorance.
In any case, for anyone who’s interested, cf:

Note that Loyola was, like Stevenson, missing one of its top two contributors (at Loyburn).
Thank you Audrey for your candid comments and support. And, if you were missing one of your best players at FaCT, then I am sure that you will justify your ranking in the very near future. And we will be rooting for this result as well, for it is easy to root for at team that is as talented and as gracious as yours is.
Again, just for the record, Hunter B was missing its best or second best player (David) at both HFT and the Harvard Burke mirror.
As usual, GDS was shorthanded today (now technically yesterday, 12/4) at GSAC XVIII at MLWGS. We were missing our second best player, Jordan. Maybe we will have our full team someday…
