Rankings Update – November 12

Stats from Tippecanoe XV and the various ACF Falls have been added. What’s the most important thing that we can take away from these results?

State College is really, really good at quiz bowl. This is, of course, not a revelation. Going into this weekend, the top PPBs on “regular season” questions (read: IS sets, HSAPQ sets, DAFT) were:

Thomas Jefferson A, 25.17 ppb, HSAPQ 16
Hunter A, 25.13 ppb, DAFT
Bellarmine A, 25.04, IS96
Detroit Catholic Central A, 24.41, HSAPQ 16
Seven Lakes A, 24.37, HSAPQ 15

The point? State College put up 26.94 ppb on ACF Fall, nearly 2 ppb than any performance on easier questions.

I’m sure SC’s real A team (as seen at ACF Fall) will lose at some point this year; the level of play across the board has increased enough to make an undefeated run through the season overly difficulty.

In other news, teams tended to get pretty good boosts from ACF Fall performances. This can be seen in the debuts of Lisle and Pensacola and in the moves by Dorman B, Richard Montgomery A, St. Joseph’s  and, to a lesser extent, Dorman A (their ACF Fall ppb would crack that list of 5 up above, by the way) and Seven Lakes A.

New teams: Lisle, Pensacola, Walnut Hills B, Northmont B

Bumped out: MAST, Chaska, Caesar Rodney, DAR

  1. Just to let you know for future rankings, Walnut Hills was split between our A and B teams at Tippecanoe. Our real B team probably doesn’t deserve to be ranked, and our A team probably would have had one more 15 per game and one or two more ppb if it hadn’t consisted, basically, of me and our B team. The Walnut Hills B that played at OSU Fall is our real B team.

  2. Kellenberg’s performance at Samhain and FaCT suggests it should be ranked higher—400+ ppg against a very good field on IS 96 is one of the best performances nationally on this set—only teams of the calibre of Hunter, Bellarmine and Richard Montgomeries did better, and not really by that much. Plus, you have Kellenberg rated behind a good team that has played in only one tournament, finishing fourth—with Kellenberg finishing first in that same tournament, defeating a strong Seton Hall team in the process! So: Give Kellenberg some love!!!

  3. Oh yes—Saint Joe’s was first at Seton Hall’s Pirate Open, not 3rd, and 5th at Princeton’s PHSAT, not 3rd, but 3rd everywhere else in HS Tournments and I am not really sure where it finished at the ACF Fall at Brandeis since several playoff teams left early skewing someplaoff brackets badly. The stats have us 4th, but I think that is an error in our favor—but 6th out of 21 might be about right, since we were top 2 in one of the 3 prelim brackets and went undefeated in the playoffs, averaging 346 ppg and 20 ppb.

  4. When you see the results from the IHSSBCA Kickoffs (played on NAQT’s IS-98, I think; 20 ?s per round, rebounding bonuses, packets 1-9/10) held at various sites on Nov. 6, you may decide to change the rankings of some Illinois teams. Rockford Auburn won the event at the Wheaton North site, defeating Stevenson 525-215 in the championship match. Auburn also beat Loyola 475-230, St. Ignatius 530-215, New Trier 600-125, and, in its closest match of the day, edged Oak Park River Forest 375-355 in the semi-final. We averaged just under 500 pts. per game. The stats are supposed to be posted on the IHSSBCA web site soon. There were 66 teams at that site.

  5. GDS will be quite short-handed at the Whitman tournament (11/13) with only one of our four usual A-team players in attendance (but that one is our best player, Daniel).

  6. Not having much of a mind for statistics, I’m not really sure whether 25th or 24th means much for Cistercian. However, on November 13th, Cistercian motored on down and won the Spartan Showdown at Katy/Seven Lakes pretty convincingly. We also had a SUPERB night at the Houston Grand Opera on evening before, taking in the last performance of Benjamin Britten’s PETER GRIMES. Hey, guys, how many QB teams do “Team Opera” the night before a competition? PS: Thanks for all the stats work – Us English teachers don’t do floors, don’t do windows, and don’t do math — so GRACIAS for all of you who DO!

  7. The Marshall HS at FRIGHT was not “Thurgood Marshall” (never heard of it) but George C. Marshall, from Falls Church, VA

  8. Chris Romero just posted stats for Spartan Showdown at Katy/Seven Lakes. Really nice stats for Vimal Konduri! Don’t know whether these numbers will have any influence on next round of rankings, but, hey, in Texas we’re happy when the sun shines (which it does a lot!) and the wind blows gently from the South.
