Quite a few changes this time. First of all, I’m expanding to 70, with the possibility of going to 100 later in the year (after that, it’s kind of just splitting hairs). Why 70? Because I’m too lazy to get to 75.Tournaments that are being added are:
Cal Classic; Danville Fall; Missouri Fall; LIFT X; Quad States Challenge; University High (WV); Pensacola Invitational; UIUC Earlybird; Hilltopper Invitational; and Quaker Bowl
A couple of other changes were made to the ratings:
- FKT performances were devalued, as the set was intended to be a JV set
- The first college performances have been added
- There’s been some movement in the top 25 this time
Here we go.

Rancho Bernardo, with their full team at CBCT at UCI, beat a divided University team to win and put up a nice bonus conversion of 23.0 on HSAPQ questions. I’d move them into the top 30 for sure, although they haven’t played Torrey with their full A team yet.
Otherwise the rankings look very good; thanks for keeping up with all this! I do wonder if there’s a bit of a bias against teams that played on IS 96 since that set seems to be trending harder than the HSAPQ ones.
Why did duPont Manual drop so much?
And why did Dunbar go up, considering their results at the Hilltopper Invitational?
Chris, I think I somehow missed that tournament. I’ll have to reevaluate them with that info.
Nick: duPont Manual dropped largely because I’ve been surprised by the performance of a few teams I had ranked below them (Northmont, Loyola, Richard Montgomery and St. Anselm’s). It’s tough to compare duPont Manual against them due to not really have much in the way of stats.
Dunbar A went up because of their performance at Danville and because they split their teams at the Hilltopper, which was an A set. I’m not putting much stock in that performance.
But I’m not sure 6 spots is justified, especially when Auburn has no results
Auburn was also ranked above duPont to start with.
At this point in the season, I am going to favor teams that actually have statistics over those that do not. duPont effectively does not have stats as a team yet, so their position is very flexible at this point. Once I actually have results for the team, I will compare duPont with other teams and rank them accordingly.
We’re planning on going to Vanderbilt this weekend, and will hopefully play on questions that will help gauge our strength more than an A-set.
Centennial HS belongs in the rankings somewhere. They lost in the quarterfinals at Walton, but only because they had to play Dorman. (Dorman showed up late and had to forfeit their 1st round, making them like #7 seed going into playoffs.) Otherwise, Centennial would have at least made the semifinals, probably the finals.
Centennial also won the GATA Fall tournament last weekend, beating Alpharetta (#7 in these rankings) in a close game in the semifinals.
Their best player, Adam Silverman, is REALLY good.
I’ve yet to figure out where to put them, but I agree with your assessment of Centennial – they’re obviously talented. I just don’t know where to slide them right now.
It might also help if there were more GA teams/players/coaches actively discussing GA Quizbowl on the public boards. That said, will Centennial be seeking out-of-state competition this year or will they stay within GA? I’m also curious how they fare at your HFT mirror, since it seemed like they did better on easier questions last year (relatively speaking, of course).
Well, Adam Silverman was the 15th highest scorer last year at the HSNCT (as a Sophomore), so he has shown that he can perform well on more difficult questions, and he has only gotten better this year. I will say that Adam seems to do especially well on NAQT questions.
Centennial also did well on the Walton questions, which were at least an average High School difficulty level this year.
In the past, Centennial hasn’t attended many tournaments, within Georgia OR out of state, but my impression is that they are planning to attend more tournaments this year. I’m not sure yet if they will be attending the HFT mirror, but I hope so.
It would definitely help if the Georgia tournaments would make keeping stats a priority and if they would be willing to make them public. It is hard otherwise to make accurate judgments on a team’s ability.
Thanks so much for putting this site together! My team (Rock Bridge) is new to the national scene, and this site is a great tool for us to gauge how we’re doing against the strongest teams nationally.
All the Best!
Our roster at FKT was missing our 2nd and 4th best players. Here’s FKT http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org=OFHS_Quiz_Bowl&id=1&page=teamdetail#t8 and here’s PACE last year http://pace-nsc.org/2010stats/2010_PACE_NSC_Aggregate_teamdetail.html#t4

Just as a note, if the University A team isn’t playing with a full team at the HFT mirror at UCSD on November 13th, chances are our full lineup won’t be back until next year because of college apps, though we’ll still be fielding teams.
Wow!
How nice to see my guys being posted on this listing! And, moving up a couple of notches, too, ain’t bad at all — thanks to whoever is our guardian angel!
But, out of necessity, we’re taking a couple of weeks off — need to re-charge batteries, get ready for All Saints’/ All Souls (and, yes, Halloween!) and then we’ll be back to competitions in November.
Once again, thanks for the considerations!
In my region, Hunter A is terrific (540 plus ppg & 25 ppb on DAFT questions at Princeton; Hunter B is also excellent, as are Seton Hall and Kellenberg. My own team, SJHS, is young but pretty good as well, but we’ll know more about all these teams as a whole when they all play IS 96 at Bergen’s Samhain this Halloween weekend. Since this Set has been played at many venues already across the country, it should provide an early basis of comparison between the best in this region and the best in other regions that have already played the set. Two very good local teams that will not be at Samhain will be Bergen Academies (because they are hosting) and White Plains, but the rest of the best regional teams will be in attendance, so it should be a pretty good competition.
GDS was relatively short-handed today at RM FRIGHT. We were missing one player for the whole day, and we lost 110 PPG Daniel after Round 5.
Our B team (Hunter) is markedly worse on NAQT than on other HS sets – I don’t know why. Probably due to a lack of lateral thinking skills. That being said, the actual B team was on the field at Samhain and I’d much rather play them than, say, Kellenberg or Seton Hall. Ranking them 40th may have been premature.
Hello! Just a quick correction — Rock Bridge finished 3rd at Mizzou Fall, not 2nd.
