Top 200 High School Quiz Bowl Rankings – 12/14/14

The rankings have expanded to 200 teams, we have a new #2 team, a whole bunch of new debuts, and a lot of movement after recalculating adjustments. Enjoy!

  2. I feel like there are some flaws in the top portion of these rankings. I don’t think it’s reasonable to only go on ppb when there is plenty of other information available, specifically head to head match ups. For example, from the tournament stats I can see that WA beat RM twice in the finals at gsac yesterday, and Maggie Walker beat RM three times last weekend at VCU winter. I understand that ppb is the only way to compare teams that have not played, but when teams have played I think it’s a flaw to not take those results into account.
    (nothing against RM, they are a very good team, but these results made for a good example)

    • Except that this excludes a bunch of data for no good reason. To value head-to-head wins in two or three games over PPB data from 20+ games (for each of those teams, if I’m not mistaken) is a bad idea.

      Does Maggie Walker’s wins against RM mean that Maggie Walker’s better than Northmont, or that Northmont is better than RM? This is a national, not a regional ranking; as such, weighing head-to-head is not beneficial.

      • Do you think there is enough data to try and establish an elo like rating system that allows comparisons between teams that accounts for head to heads?

      • Well, DCC beat Northmont two times at UK Fall, so your own comparison doesn’t hold up in that case.

        As for an ELO rating system: Dave Bykowski did one a few years ago, and it was flawed in the ways you would expect a head-to-head only system to be (overrated teams in weak regions, underrated third or fourth best teams in strong regions).

  3. also, Homewood-Flossmore A put up a 19.20 at Earlybird at U of I back in October. That was on the BISB set and I have no idea if that’s good enough to get them ranked but I figured it was close enough to mention it. They were abbreviated to HFA in the stats

  4. Which tournaments are being used for Lisgar’s stats? I recognize the number for the Brainbusters tournament but the other two don’t seem to match up with anything I can find (and is there somewhere I can find this season’s stat adjustments? I’m not seeing anything newer than 2013-2014)
