2014-2015 Quiz Bowl Season Preview: Part Eleven

We’ve made it into the top half of the pre-nationals rankings, so we’re starting with 91-100 this time. Note that #99 was duPont Manual B, so they’ll be covered when we get to the A team’s entry.

100. Lisgar A (ON) – Lisgar just ended a season where they finished tied for 34th at HSNCT (I wonder if that’s the best Canadian finish at HSNCT ever – it’s certainly Lisgar’s best), but their first season where they didn’t win a local tournament all year in a few years at least. This team loses two of its three main scorers from this past season, but does retain Aidan Ryan (53.5 PPG, lead scorer at the LIST mirror held at Bell).

Expected performance next season: Down

98. Horace Greeley A (NY) – The fourth place team from the Mountain Lakes Invitational graduates everyone from that team. Next year will definitely be a rebuilding one.

Expected performance next season: Down

97. Enloe A (NC) – The champions at the Bacon Bowl, Enloe tied for 35th at the PACE NSC. They lose two significant scorers in Illirik Smirnov and lead scorer Justin Luo. They do retain Rohan Krishnamoorthy, their second scorer from last year. They’ll probably be a top 200 team next year just with Rohan, but they’ll need some players to step to hit the top 100 again.

Expected performance next season: Down

96. Fremd A (IL) – Fremd made the HSNCT playoffs after going 6-4, but lost in their first game once they got there. This is a team that largely depended on Jenny Yang for scoring; they keep her but do graduate some secondary players. Still, I expect them to be on the upswing this season.

Expected performance next season: Up

95. Hinsdale Central A (IL) – After having a decent season in a difficult Illinois region, Hinsdale Central made the HSNCT playoffs with a 6-4 record but managed two wins before getting knocked out in their sole loss. That performance tied them for 34th. They retain all four of their players from their best regular season performance at Auburn High School on the Harvard Fall set.

Expected performance next season: Up

94. Eden Prairie A (MN) – The NAQT State Champions of Minnesota went 6-4 to make the HSNCT playoffs – and then won three straight games before losing to George Washington caused their elimination. While they retain Jordan LaCerte, they lose by far their lead scorer in James Wang. They’re going to have to work to reach their levels from this past season in 2014-15.

Expected performance next season: Down

93. Wheaton North A(IL) – The sixth place finishers at the NAQT Illinois State Championship, WN put together a 7-3 record to make the HSNCT playoffs but dropped two straight for their elimination. All four of Wheaton North’s main scorers – including lead scorer Nathaniel Perrin – graduated, leaving them in a position requiring rebuilding.

Expected performance next season: Down

92. Phoenixville A (PA) – Top six finishers at Penn QuAC and second place finishers at the NAQT Eastern Pennsylvania Championship, Phoenixville narrowly missed the HSNCT playoffs with a 5-5 record. They graduated all of their major scorers from their A team, so 2014-15 will involve rebuilding for them.

Expected performance next season: Down

91. Pikeville A (KY) – If Pikeville can actually attend tournaments, Ammad Mansoor can make a major impact next year. He scored over 100 PPG at the Hilltopper Invitational and narrowly missed out on making the Kentucky NASAT team. He returns for the 2014-15 season, as does Pikeville’s national relevance.

Expected performance next season: Up
