Let’s not bury the lead: there’s a new number one.
So, why LASA A over State College?
- LASA A’s performance on ACF Regionals is equal, if not better, to what I’d guess that a full strength State College would do on the same set
- LASA A had a higher ppg and did finish better than (a short handed) State College at HFT
- LASA A has played together as a unit more often than State College
I see the argument for State College staying number one. At this moment, though, I’m going with LASA A.
Other notes:
- Adlai Stevenson over Maggie Walker in a close decision, based off a slightly better statistical performance after their top two tournaments, where they’re very close.
- I thought about moving Hunter over the previously mentioned two teams as well. It’s a close group.
- Seven Lakes gets a bump over Dorman because of rumors that the latter has lost a key player.
- Seven Lakes over Bellarmine because of playing time considerations. There’s an argument here because of ACF Regs stats.
I was going to break teams into tiers of similarly strong teams, but I just don’t have time to do that right now. I’d probably define the top tier (call them “national championship favorites”) as the top eight teams: LASA, State College, Stevenson, Maggie Walker, Hunter, Seven Lakes, Dorman, Bellarmine.
The second tier, which I was planning on treating like dark horses for the national championships – teams that definitely have the ability to win, but wouldn’t be on the same level of “obviously likely to win” – would start with Centennial and run through… oh, 25th or so. Of course, that’s without much thought behind it, so don’t get too bent out of shape about them.

Yaphe Acadamey A at VCU Winter, using the VCUblit set, was actually TJ B not TJ A. (I’d mentioned this last time and you said it would be reflected in the next update, but you left the stat line under TJ A this time so I figured I’d bring it up again). Also “TJ B” at VCU’s Prisonbowl was really TJ C.
I suppose it doesn’t really matter since we won’t be playing another legit tournament until HSNCT, but Ladue has been missing their #2 player (Zev) at all tournaments except WUHSAC and Tiger Bowl.
I’m surprised to see TJ B stay in the same place after their performances at PSAT/NMSQT and NAQT States.
PSAT is the easiest non-A-set of the year, and the NAQT States performance was definitely good but in line with the rest of their work this year. I don’t see anything here that’s shattering my monocles.
Well, they did beat Gov at NAQT States while their best player was on A team.
^^ this.
Although PSAT was pretty easy, and the PPB were a bit high across the board, TJ B were well balanced and absolutely dismantled a lot of good teams playing on the same questions and were pretty competitive against Maggie Walker as well. I think we’ll see them up in the teens at HSNCT and NSC
72 teams go to NSC, 208 teams go to HSNCT, and yet a team that has qualified for neither* is at #69. They must be one of the most unlucky teams on this list.
*They qualify for NSC if the Ohio NAQT State Tournament gets platinum certified.
St. Charles qualified for the NSC at OSU’s fall DAFT tournament.

I was dismayed to see the latest turn of ranking results regarding TEXAS teams, esp. in light of the detrimental circumstances created by the TQBA State meet, a meet which is cited here numerous times. A significant error by one of the scoring officials eliminated Cistercian “A” from the competition after the prelims, thus depriving us of our ability to compete for the State Title. Sadly, the tournament director informed me of the error on the day AFTER the competition was completed! How do we retrieve a legitimate opportunity which was snatched from my students who’d worked so hard for a year? And now I see these Texas State results spread out all over these rankings for LASA “A”, Seven Lakes “A” St. Mark’s “A” etc. There is no way to repair the damage done to my school’s team, yet some adjustment to these rankings should be made.
I am also dismayed that the “Statement of Apology” given by Chris Romero, the state tournament director, was NOT published on the NAQT website where these stats were posted, but only on his own web site. When I inquired about WHY this apology was not posted, I was given some explanation about technicalities that failed to address the real need for redress.
Here is that statement: “Due to a typographical error in SQBS Cistercian A was excluded erroneously from the Championship Bracket. Cistercian A, LASA B, and Seven Lakes B all had 4-1 records at the end of the prelims, which led to a bonus conversion tie breaker. The typo led us to believe that Cistercian had the lowest bonus conversion, thus excluding them from the championship bracket. This issue was not discovered until the day after the tournament. Texas Quiz Bowl apologizes for the mistake and will issue a refund to Cistercian A.”
Also, I might make the observation that anyone who looks at the St. Mark’s tournament results from April 2nd will see that Cistercian ‘A’ beat St. Mark’s ‘A’ in all 3 matches that we had, yet they have leapt in front of our ranking. Hmmm. I take nothing away from St. Mark’s — they have a fine team and, should they make it to NAQT Nationals, they will fare well, I have no doubt. But the manner in which rankings are composed simply needs to be addressed in another manner.
In closing, I suspect that the BAD results at the TQBA State meet will work to Cistercian’s detriment, even though I have been assured that will not be the case. I can only look at the silver lining and assume that ‘underdog’ status may well work for us at NAQT/Atlanta and then again at PACE.
Chill, it’s just rankings, do well in nationals, instead of ranting here.
“Ranting” is for spoiled sports — that’s not my problem. I just don’t like having my students disadvantaged and then have rankings subsequently reflect that disadvantage as if it were nothing — when it’s not. But, yes, we plan on doing well at nationals.
Actually, you’d be incorrect. I have Cistercian A’s performance at TQBA state to be either their second or third best performance of the year. I honestly don’t put much (any?) stock into finish order for the tournaments I’m looking at.
So, for the purposes of this, I don’t think you really suffered any harm from that error.
I hope you tell the people at PACE that bit of news, too. Thanks!
I’m pretty confused as to why North Providence’s A team is not listed here. North Providence put up some good stats [and won] on the annual Rhode Island Quiz League tournament, beating such normal powerhouses as Narragansett. We put up an impressive 78 points per game, at one point even making a perfect 112. Any rationale for why our team isn’t listed?
[Also, please keep in mind we were missing me at the Quiz League regionals, hence our less great performance.]
78 ppg? Are you sure you’re talking about quizbowl?
Stop playing such foreign forms of quizbowl! Even we here have such advanced formats as General Studies of Africa Competition (GSAC) and National Academic Recall Endeavour of Nigeria (NAREN).
Yeah, I don’t really know what “a perfect 112” means, but it’s probably not the type of quiz bowl we’re referring to on this website. Also, I have never heard the term “quiz league” used to designate a good quiz bowl state organization, but I’ll leave you to feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Further, even your powerhouse local teams might not be strong enough to qualify for these rankings even if you guys are playing on good quiz bowl sets.
However, if your Quiz League tournaments are full of one-line questions and completely unpredictable answers, like this thread seems to indicate: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=11312, then anybody on this site, especially myself, would be happy to introduce you guys to a better form of academic competition. Email me or give an affirmative reply to this post if you’re interested.
The Rhode Island Quiz League is run on questions written by a collection of educators in Rhode Island. Each year there is a regional and finals tournament. Scoring a perfect 112 points throughout the three rounds is very rare. I think our accomplishments deserve to be recognized.
To be recognized here, you have to have played some form of pyramidal quizbowl (NAQT, HSAPQ, etc) at some point during the year (at least I assume that’s what the policy is). You can’t be compared with these other teams if you don’t play the same sets they do.
Yeah. It’d be close to impossible to do these rankings if everyone just played on their own regional/state sets.
Yes, but our regional set tests knowledge just as well [if not better] than those other sets you mentioned [the only one of which I’ve heard of is NAQT.] These questions are very good and so are we.
Play some nationwide sets so you can be compared! There is literally no way for anyone to compare your Rhode Island set’s difficulty to that of nationals sets, or for other teams to participate so you could establish actual comparative rankings.
Alan, stop being pretentious. Don’t say that you are better than us, and then refuse to play with us. I highly doubt the Rhode Island questions are as good as HSAPQ/NAQT ones, considering what I’ve seen of similar programs in the past.
A Google search for “Rhode Island Quiz League” returns nothing that would redirect towards your competition, and NAQT’s page of state-level organizations has no Rhode Island link. Is there a link you can provide, Alan?
But, more to everyone else’s point, if it’s too late to qualify for the national tournaments organized by NAQT or PACE, I’m sure HSAPQ would love to see an application by yourself and other top players in the state to represent Rhode Island in the 2nd NASAT at Maryland this summer. http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11090#p208048
Not to mention that your post about quality comparison is based entirely on assumption since you said yourself that you’ve only *heard* of NAQT (not that you’d ever played a packet) and have not played the others Raynell mentioned. I am aware that your faith in the writing abilities of Rhode Island educators must be very high, but even very educated people can write bad quiz bowl. Good quiz bowl is a practice that has been established only after much trial and error, and national organizations like NAQT/HSAPQ are written by folks who’ve been playing good quiz bowl for very long. So if you want to be exposed to good quiz bowl, be my guest, but if you’re going to shut yourself off from sets that are by consensus highly regarded in the quiz bowl community, it’s your loss.
I sent Fred Morlan and Tanay Kothari a sample packet of Rhode Island Quiz League questions and an explanation of how the league works. I look forward to being added to the rankings list in the next update.
Alan, just because you did that, there is no way you are going to be ranked. Without playing a HSAPQ or NAQT set, there is no way you can be compared or ranked.
Hello esteemed Fred Morlan,
My quizbowls team from Igbobi College, Lagos, Nigeria, are very good at quizbowl. We scored most points (11 per game!) in Bible Bowl, Biafra Bowl, and Bongo Bowl tournaments. Why we are not included in most recent rankings?
Also our awards are most impressive:

Please mention us for considerations in your next rankings. Adios.
Epic Win.
Racist, in poor taste, both? Some of us are actually old enough to remember the horrors of the civil war in Biafra! “Biafra Bowl” is NOT funny — it is a pathetically lame attempt at humor. Funny? NOT!
PS: Jihadist humor about ‘child soldiers’ is also in grotesque taste.
This post makes no reference to the Biafran War (just the geographic region). Saying that I am evoking the “horrors of the civil war in Biafra” is akin to saying that anyone who mentions North Vietnam in jest is “in poor taste”, just because some would associate that region with the conflict. Also, child soldiers aren’t brought up anywhere in the article. You seem to be the only individual who is trying to glean additional meaning from this post. Well, it doesn’t exist.
It’s extremely funny. Overly PC people like you are a killjoy to the rest of us.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL 😀 😀 😀
Darn you, RM B. Always one step ahead of us…
Lol looking forward to more matches to sort it out
Jesus Christ what is wrong with you people
^^
Alan if you’re still reading this (I wouldn’t blame you if you weren’t), could you send me a set of your questions?
Thanks,
Graham
I too would be interested in seeing this, if you don’t mind.
This was my favorite update ever.
